Yarn Over Buttonhole

Yarn Over Buttonhole

There are just so many options available for adding buttonholes to a knit buttonband. One of the simplest is the yarn-over option. Honestly, it’s probably my most common method for adding in buttonholes, as it creates a fairly stretchy buttonhole and super easy to perform.

Step 1: Once you get to where you’d like to place your buttonhole, decide if you’d like your buttonhole before or after your decrease. In the video above, I placed it before the decrease.

Step 2: Make a YO.

Step 3: Work your decrease: either a k2tog or p2tog, depending on your stitch pattern. In the video, it is p2tog.

Step 4: When you are working across again, work these two sts as they would normal. In the video, b/c they are purls on the RS, these sts are knit on the WS.

And that’s it! Super easy and basic. Check my video on my blog to see the difference between this Yarn Over Buttonhole, a 2 stitch Bind Off Buttonhole, and a No Cut Afterthought Buttonhole.
